Congrats! Welcome to the underdog gadfly club. This is the best paragraph ever written about Substack:
"For all the irony and eye-rolling, we were dead earnest about the company mission. We wanted to arm the rebels, root for the underdogs, make America’s present-day gadflies crazy stupidly rich. A decade after the idea went out of vogue, Substack’s leadership maintained the starry-eyed hope that the open internet and its marketplace of ideas could be a democratizing, liberating force. It was hard not to be compelled by such sincerity."
You capture Substack so well here. How lucky we all were to get the chance to work with you. Will be rooting for you always. Congrats and please let's plan many drink dates. Oh and crash all the Substack parties we will never think its weird.
I’d bet on you any day! Can’t wait to see what this next chapter has in store 🧡 feel lucky to witness and learn from your epic chapter here at Substack
The thing is I actually see you writing a couple of newsletters. The best quote from this piece was I need to f****** get in the arena. There really isn't a great open source AI newsletter, that tells us what's going on in the space on a weekly basis and dives deep into some of the more expansive issues. It pains me that you are leaving this job but you were there for quite a while. I've been doing this full time for 3 years.
Beautiful and so brave to read more about your journey! I look forward to following along and if you ever need some community support we’re all here for you over at Sparkle on Substack! ✨📖
Jasmine, I appreciate your knowledge and help over the years. I wish you all the best. My suggestion would be to take your c.v. and clips to Wired magazine; I think they should hire you immediately. I know you worked hard to make Substack a good place for a writer to work, even us boomers! Great triumphs await you.
I've heard a range of reviews on substack from the reddit and twitter commentors of the world over the past few years. Some say this platform is a curse, and the moderation decisions have helped to inflame or at least support some of the societal harms that we're seeing play out in real time. Others believe the platform is phenomenal, truly a game changing way to approach pursuing their passion and calling.
I joined as a writer (off and on) a while back to see for myself. The writing (mainly the consistency) has been fine, and the platform is intuitive enough to merit coming back to it when I feel a spark of inspiration. But between this post and a podcast interview with the founder, I'm convinced that there's some legitimate thoughtfulness, intention, and care behind the platform, and some really interesting folks trying to build on it as well.
This was a compelling read; as an ex-anthropology major, current tech professional, and intermittent writer, I look forward to following more of the journey.
